BGCN Tipping the Scale Summer Interns at Baptist Medical Center Nassau were hard at work.

The Tipping the Scale Adolescent and Advocacy Intervention Mentoring Program exposes Club members to career possibilities. The program is a year-round youth mentoring initiative.

The students begin the program as early as ninth grade with nine weeks of weekly training sessions on such topics as resume writing, job interviewing, money management and accountability. They complete a career-interest inventory and participate in mock job interviews with employers.

Students who successfully meet the training requirements are selected for summer employment at Baptist Health. They work in a variety of areas including adult and pediatric nursing units, accounting, telecommunications, radiology, health information management, physical therapy or information services and are paid for a 40-hour work week.

Each student has a year-round overall mentor, as well as an employment mentor for the summer, who is a supervisor in the department they work in.

Students have the opportunity to decide to pursue a career in the Tipping the Scale field they work in but this is not a necessity, more importantly they learn how to be professional, work on interpersonal skills, and how to care for people which is all transferable.
