A Story of Commitment

What began as a commitment to local children has grown into a lasting investment in kids, families, and the future of Nassau County.

2000

When Nassau County commissioners asked Amelia Island local David Miller, Sr. to open a Boys & Girls Club in Yulee, little did they know the long-term legacy that David was about to create.

It was 1999, and the following year, the first school-based program opened. And it was a success. So successful, in fact that plans quickly formed to build a dedicated facility for the kids of Nassau County.

Two Club Sites

A Capital Campaign was launched and within four years The Miller Freedom Center open it’s doors on Old Nassauville Road. The facility included a full-sized gymnasium, a kitchen and cafeteria, lots of classroom space for kids of all ages and a huge outdoor recreation space.

The project pulled the community together and soon the Boys & Girls Clubs of Nassau County Foundation launched an annual gala to support the long-term continued operation of the Miller Freedom Center. Nobody expected the Gala to become THE event of the year.

A Growing Network

As word of the good work happening at the Boys & Girls Clubs grew, so too did the need. It wasn’t long before a second club was in the works. Again, the community rallied. David Miller and the City of Fernandina Beach reached an agreement with a long-term lease and the second dedicated Boys & Girls Club building became a reality.

Roberts Learning & Achievement Center took shape just behind Southside Elementary School. Kids could simply walk to the club after school.

Today

Both clubs continue to thrive, and as the population increases in Nassau County and needs grow, we continue our work to grow along side the need.

Our sights include expansion into the west side of Nassau County, and expanding opportunities for teens with work force development, college preparation and educational support.

As long as there are families and children who need support, our goal is be there – building clubs, kids and community and sustaining the legacy created by David Miller, Sr. decades ago.
